I spent, No... I was blessed to be invited by a dear and talented artist friend to attend a short pose sketching group that meets weekly. It is a mostly younger crowd... I believe from the Dr. Sketchy's group. Watch out people, this group of up and comers or just out of schoolers is a talented lot. Friendly, confident, a good group from what I observed. It was fun... but sheesh, I am rusty in the short pose department... anyways... good bad or indifferent, here are the 10 minute and 5 minute poses that were passable.

A full house on this evening... a hot summer night, so I parked myself on the cool floor and drew fabric. It was a good evening. If you can't see the model, it is no excuse to still not produce some work. Focus on something that you can see. This case: fabric draped over a sofa pillow. Good friends, good times, good music, and I get to draw, what else could a person wish for?

Steampunk wizard of oz... what to do, how to do it, how does it look, why does it look this way, what story am I telling, and why am I telling this story/ why does it need to be told? So back to the animals. They sooth me. They are stories all rolled up in their eyes, their very existence.

Red Door Studio Drawing Group night moved to Saturday nights. For the first time since it started, I wasn't late. It is good to get out there and reconnect with others, to reconnect with drawing, and to get away from the TV. I have actually seen an improvement since I have started going... and seen an improvement in the Wednesday Noon sketch group drawings as well. Little tiny steps forward, but when I look over time at the drawings and doodles, it shows. It always does.

Hokey Smokes!!! After 2 weeks of watching tutorials in the evenings and weekends, and 2 more week evenings of fighting with dreamweaver... the first site is done and live. Go take a peek, please. No, it isn't fancy shmancy. But, it will get better with time... as I get more adept at knowing what does what... and more importantly what does NOT.
I have learned a ton on what not to do, and still am shutting my virtual fingers in the door.

I have been having massive troubles with portraits lately. maybe too much stress, maybe too much pressure put upon the drawing? Anyway, I decided to put a little practice in before Wednesday Noon Sketch group and did a self portrait last night for warm ups. Hopefully it will help remind me to take things for what they are worth and stay in the present time. My better work is completed when I start off with an honest belief that this piece is just something to pass the time with. It could go in the trash, in the closet, who cares... it is play time for me. For each of us. Remember that. This is supposed to be fun. iF it isn't fun, you are doing it wrong.

Steampunk Pilot: I had a bunch of fun with this. Looking back to the works of H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Mary Shelly, Robert Louis Stevenson, Edgar Rice Burroughs. It appears to be a mix of Victorian, beginnings of the industrial revolution, maybe a pinch of the Western explorers, and maybe a touch of Goth if you wish. I have also seen a pinch of Mad Max / Tank Girl mixed in on an occasion.

Storks at Dana Point: The start of my biggest piece 19 x 25. This is a scan of a bit less than half of the paper. Forgive me, the scanner we have is but a baby. But she is a good one. Also there is about 3 - 4 inches missing from the top as well. There is another stork facing the other direction that has not even been roughed in yet. This will take a while. But hopefully will be a validation ground for some of the things that I have been testing in the previous works. We shall see.

I heard a wise person once say that an artist spends the first session creating a drawing and the rest of the sessions screwing it up and fixing series after series of mistakes due to indecision. Blue Girl 2: The start of a tall skinny. Scrap paper is nothing to sneeze at, especially when it watermarks up the paper. Thank you, I'll be here all week... try the fish.
No promises, I will attempt to loosen up as the drawing lowers. Sort of like Ingres did, only sloppier and less refined.

Well, did one with dark darks. This was a hated beast to scan. Prismacolor has so much wax content that if I put a wick in this drawing it will burn for a week. The build up is tremendous. I will have to find another medium for working with saturated intense values, because this was a real car crash and didn't need to be. I learned. Boundaries now reset. That is always good. Came really close to going "doug smash" on this one. And to pieces it almost went. But, that isn't a proper example to set or an adult solution. So, since I can't drink... I just sat with arms folded and hated until I could feel that the drawing felt sorry.

yet another attempt at a self portrait, again... it just isn't there, technically, conceptually. sepia on toned paper. American Artist is having a Self Portrait competition this year due May First, and the National Gallery is having their Portrait competition. I am trying a new outlook advised by a close friend... get out there and do it. So I am doing... Doing for me, if I get in, great... it not, then the work and effort I put in will have brought me farther along on my path of discovery. If I create something that I until that time thought unreachable, or unlock questions that have been leaving my work unresolved, what more can I ask?

Zoo Sketch trip 408- Well, I did it. The first sketch trip to the zoo. It was cool when we started, 46 degrees, but the sun was out and everybody was pumped. The first batch of sketches absolutely stunk. Was intimidated, cold, and not warmed up eye/hand coordination wise. But as the morning progressed, so did I. The highlight of the excursion was the Australia walk. I got to sit quietly amongst a herd of red kangaroos. Some of which were only 10 feet away from me. I didn't move, and did not make any sounds. They seemed extremely curious that a person was not running around or making lots of sounds. This person just sat there like a lump. Not moving. They had to get a closer look at this. Maybe to see if I was hibernating? It was a wondrous moment for me. They would cock their heads and stare and move closer. I drew a crowd of folks in the distance. "Joey-whisperer".

Zoo 408- The last of the submissions for the Zoo volunteer for 2008. Finished it up this morning and got it scanned in. Whew. It is a rough finish, but it is on the beloved Craft Paper. Alright... now to start the day. What a fun experience this was.

James 3: The start of a new drawing. Probably won't have much time for a while to work on this. But I would like to have it done fairly quickly. American Artist is having a self portrait competition due May First 2008. I haven't done a self portrait in such a long time... a finished piece. Hmmmm could be fun. My father (James) is always fun to render. Such a familiar subject. Just seeing him two weekends ago made me get out the pastel paper and work on a new piece. Makes me miss him a little less.

This is what I do when I am stuck at an airport for a 2.5 hour layover. I do drawings of folks just hanging around the airport. Most don't turn out but are fun to do... this was fun to do and it turned out.

I am working from a tablet of pastel papers and kraft papers without binding. It is freeing in some respects (being left handed). I love not being chewed by spiral binding. But I miss not having a collected stash for my drawings other than a box. Well, it is in a folder and well protected until some solution can be found. But until the paper is used, this is quite an experiment.
